Bifrost

Bifrost is a permissionless bridge that moves Bitcoin in and out of Cardano, secured by stake pool operators instead of a custodial holder.

Overview

Bifrost is a bridge that lets you move Bitcoin in and out of the Cardano network without handing your coins to a company. You lock real Bitcoin and receive a matching Cardano token called fBTC, which you can use in Cardano apps and later swap back for your Bitcoin. What sets it apart is that Cardano's independent stake pool operators, not a single custodian, guard the locked Bitcoin1.

Bifrost is built by FluidTokens together with Lantr and ZkFold, and it runs as shared public infrastructure rather than a for-profit product with its own coin2. Fees paid for using the bridge flow into a treasury instead of a project token. The goal is to let Bitcoin holders put their coins to work in Cardano's decentralized finance apps, where lending, trading, and other services live.

Key Features

  • No company holds your Bitcoin. A majority of Cardano stake pool operators, the same groups that keep the network running, must agree before any locked Bitcoin can move, which spreads control across many independent parties1.
  • Open watchtowers anyone can run. Watchtowers relay Bitcoin activity so the bridge can be checked in public, and only one honest watchtower needs to exist for the checks to hold3.
  • A Cardano token backed one-for-one. Sending Bitcoin through the bridge mints fBTC on Cardano, each unit backed by one locked Bitcoin, and sending it back destroys the fBTC and releases your Bitcoin4.
  • No project token to buy. Bifrost is run as public infrastructure, so there is no dedicated Bifrost coin and fees go to a shared treasury2.
  • A path for Cardano's newer layers. The design aims to connect Bitcoin to Cardano scaling layers such as Midgard and Sundial, extending where bridged Bitcoin can be used2.

What to Expect

Bifrost is built for safety over speed, so it suits people moving larger amounts who care most about security. A full transfer can take around a week because moves are grouped and settled at fixed points in Cardano's schedule5. When speed matters more, FluidTokens offers a separate service for quick, low-cost swaps.

To start, you connect both a Bitcoin wallet and a Cardano wallet on the homepage, then send the Bitcoin you want to bridge. A live stats page shows real activity on the bridge, including how much Bitcoin has been deposited and how much fBTC has been minted, so you can see current usage before committing6. The bridge is live on the main networks and its code is open source, so anyone can read exactly how it works.
