Overview
Blazar Labs is a software company that builds its own blockchain-backed products for winemaking, payments and healthcare, and also builds software for other organizations1. Institutions, businesses and early-stage ventures can hire its teams for strategy, prototyping or extra engineering capacity2.
Blazar Labs works from Moldova and says it has signed memorandums of understanding with public bodies there, including the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization and the National Office of Vine and Wine3. Several of its products began as projects funded by Project Catalyst, Cardano's community grant fund4,5,6. Most of that work runs on Cardano, including contactless payments and wine bottle tracking. On Midnight, a blockchain designed to keep data private, the team built a medical records app with XO Baby, a maker of smart baby carriers6.
Key Features
- Contactless payments in ADA. BlazarPay is a phone wallet built to let customers make contactless ADA payments to merchants, and it has been tested in a field pilot on Cardano's test network7. Payments run through Hydra, a Cardano add-on built for fast transactions, and the product page lists fees under 0.5%8.
- Payment code you can inspect. The engine behind BlazarPay is published as open-source code on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license, which lets anyone read, reuse and modify it9. Security firm Entangled Labs reviewed its smart contracts, the programs that run on the blockchain, and reported no critical issues7.
- Wine records from vineyard to bottle. WineOpSys gives wineries one dashboard for vineyards, grape loads, tanks, batches and shipments, and records each batch and bottle as a digital token on the blockchain so its history can be traced8.
- Wine labels that meet EU rules. Tracecork turns ingredient, allergen, nutrition and origin details into a QR code on the label, following the EU wine labelling regulation 2021/21178.
- Health data that families control. The Blazar Labs Medical Records platform gathers baby health readings such as heart rate and oxygen levels in one dashboard, and uses Midnight to share them only with approved parents, doctors and researchers8.
What to Expect
The Blazar Labs website is a company site rather than an app. Visitors find a page for each product, a services page, a blog and a contact form for project enquiries1.
For wineries, WineOpSys is a web app with dashboards for vineyards, grapes, bulk and bottled wine, automated reports and 28 interface languages, and access is given on request rather than through open sign-up. The bottle tokens that WineOpSys tracks are created by a service built into Tracecork, the same tool that produces the wine labels5.
For businesses and public bodies, the services page describes four ways to work with the team: digital transformation planning, blockchain systems for institutions, extra engineers placed in a client's team or run as a nearshore team (engineers in a nearby country), and support for early-stage projects, including fundraising2.
For shops and shoppers, BlazarPay was tested in a field pilot with one merchant on Cardano's test network, and the Blazar team set up the merchant account rather than offering self-service sign-up7.
With Mesh SDK, a toolkit for Cardano app builders, and the Technical University of Moldova, Blazar Labs ran a blockchain masterclass for master's students10. The Cardano Foundation co-hosted a side event with the company at the World Congress of Vine and Wine in Chișinău11. Readers comparing similar work can browse supply chain and payments projects in the directory.
