Overview

LayerZero is a cross-chain messaging protocol that lets apps and tokens move between separate blockchains without a central operator in the middle. A developer building on one network can send a message, a payment, or a token to another network as if the two were part of the same system. It powers Stargate, a widely used service for sending assets between chains, and underpins tools that let a single token exist natively across many networks at once.

LayerZero is built by LayerZero Labs and connects a broad set of networks, mostly in the Ethereum, Solana, and Move-based worlds. Its connection to Cardano was announced through a deal that Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson confirmed publicly, opening a path for assets and messages from other chains to reach Cardano1. On Cardano the practical value is interoperability: letting tokens and data cross in and out of the ecosystem rather than staying walled off2.

Key Features

  • One token, many chains. LayerZero's token standard lets a single asset move natively across every connected network, so a token isn't locked on one chain or turned into a wrapped copy on another3.
  • Send assets between networks. Stargate, the transfer service built on LayerZero, moves assets directly between chains from a shared pool of liquidity, instead of stranding funds on the wrong side of a bridge4.
  • Choose your own security. Each app picks which independent checkers must approve a cross-chain message before it goes through, tuning the trade-off between speed, cost, and caution to fit what it's moving3.
  • A gateway on every chain. Every connected network gets a small on-chain contract that sends and receives messages point to point, so apps talk to each other directly rather than routing through a separate middle chain3.
  • Open and audited code. The protocol's code is public on GitHub, and independent firms including Certora and Dedaub have reviewed its core contracts56.

What to Expect

For most people, LayerZero is the plumbing behind an app rather than something you visit directly. If you use a service that moves tokens between chains, such as Stargate, you pick a source network and a destination, approve the transfer, and the assets arrive on the other side without you touching a manual bridge4.

For developers, LayerZero is a toolkit for building apps that span several blockchains at once. You connect to a gateway contract on each network, send and receive messages between them, and let the protocol handle delivery and fees across chains. Documentation, code examples, and software kits are published for the networks it supports7.

Its reach to Cardano is still taking shape. Reporting points to a phased rollout rather than a finished, fully live mainnet connection, so anyone evaluating LayerZero for Cardano specifically should confirm the current stage of the integration before relying on it12. LayerZero has also owned up to a past security failure tied to how one app's message-checking was configured, a reminder that the safety of a cross-chain transfer depends on how each app sets up its checks8.
