Overview
Nucast Subscriptions is a paid-subscription tool that lets a creator charge fans a small recurring fee in exchange for ongoing access to their content. Fans connect a Cardano wallet, top up a subscription account with ADA (the main asset on Cardano) or USDM (a US-dollar stablecoin), and a smart contract pulls the monthly fee for each plan they signed up for. Think of it as a crypto-native Patreon, where the recurring billing happens on-chain instead of through a card processor.
Nucast Subscriptions is built by Nucast Labs, a studio focused on digital ownership of media — film, music, gaming content — on Cardano. The team has run the Cardano Summit in Bangalore and received Project Catalyst funding for related streaming work1.
Key Features
- Pay creators in ADA or stablecoins. The subscribe flow accepts both ADA and USDM, so a fan can keep value in their preferred form and a creator can choose the asset they want to be paid in2.
- Funded subscription account. Instead of approving each charge by hand, fans top up a smart-contract-managed account once and then subscribe to plans against that balance, similar to topping up a transit card2.
- Smart-contract billing on Cardano. Recurring fees are pulled by a subscription contract rather than a centralized payment processor, so a creator does not depend on a card network or app-store policy to collect fees2.
- Hydra-based subscription library. The team's open-source Hydra subscriptions code uses Cardano's Layer-2 scaling system to handle high-frequency micropayments, with operators minting access slots inside a Hydra head3.
- Open-source contracts. The subscription smart contracts and supporting libraries are published on the Nucast Labs GitHub, where builders and reviewers can read or extend the code3.
What to Expect
The subscription site is a single page. The top of the page shows a wallet balance and a subscription-account balance side by side, with a Load Your Account button to move ADA or USDM from a regular wallet into the subscription contract. Below that is a list of available subscription plans. Each row shows the creator, the recurring fee, a Subscribe Now button, and a separate View Content link out to the creator's own subdomain.
For creators, the value is recurring revenue from fans without needing a credit-card merchant account or a Web2 subscription platform. For fans, the experience trades the familiar card-on-file model for a wallet-on-file model: top up once, subscribe to whichever creators you want, and keep the rest of your funds in your own wallet.
The product is best understood as one piece of the wider Nucast suite, which also covers a media app, ticketing, and identity tools1. Founder Sricharan Ganta describes Nucast as building "decentralized products that return true ownership of digital media to users and creators"1. The practical question for any visitor is whether the creators they want to support are already on Nucast — or whether they can encourage a favorite creator to set up a plan.
