Overview
Protofire is a blockchain engineering firm that companies hire to design, build, and then operate their software on a blockchain. Banks, crypto exchanges, asset managers, and the teams that run blockchain networks bring it in when they want engineers who have shipped that kind of system before1. Protofire has worked this way since 2016, and the client keeps ownership of the code written for them2.
On Cardano, Protofire built SmartDB, an open-source library that mirrors an application's on-chain records into an ordinary database, so developers can query them with tools they already know. It came out of a Project Catalyst grant, the community-voted funding program for Cardano software, which finished and paid out in full3,4. On Midnight, the privacy-focused network built alongside Cardano, Protofire rebuilt DIA's price oracle, the service that carries outside market prices onto a chain, in Compact, Midnight's own programming language for code that runs on the blockchain5,6. - A free safety net for blockchain code. Protofire maintains Solhint, an open-source checker that flags style problems and known security bugs in Solidity, the programming language used on Ethereum and many other networks, before code is deployed12,13.
What to Expect
If you are looking to hire engineers, Protofire's site is organized around what you are trying to build rather than around the firm itself. Service pages, industry pages, and reference architectures (worked examples showing how the parts of a system fit together) sit next to case studies setting out what was delivered for each client14. The engagement path is spelled out plainly: you describe what you are building, an engineer reads it, a call follows, and a written proposal arrives within one business day of that call15.
If you are a developer, some of what Protofire produces is free to pick up. Its GitHub organization publishes Solhint under an MIT license and the SmartDB library under GPL-3.0, alongside the now-archived project generator and sample marketplace application16,9,12. Documentation for those tools sits in the repositories themselves rather than on a separate documentation site, so the README files and the example project are where a developer starts9,11.
Protofire is a services firm rather than a product you sign up for. There is no app to create an account on. What a visitor gets is either an engineering team for hire or the open-source tools the firm publishes along the way14,16.
