Overview
Ultimate Cardano Smart Contracts is a programming book that teaches developers to write smart contracts, small programs that run on a blockchain and enforce agreements without a middleman. Readers learn by building one project, a ticketing app, from first design through testing and deployment1. Lawrence Arthur Ley wrote the book, and the publisher hosts free companion code on GitHub, so the hands-on chapters come with working files to run and change2.
Orange AVA, a publisher of technical books for software developers, released it in 2024 at about 330 pages1. It is the second title in Orange AVA's two-book Cardano path for blockchain developers, following Kickstart Blockchain and Cryptography Fundamentals3. The publisher aims it at software developers, architects, analysts, computer science students, and entrepreneurs1.
Key Features
- A full app, built step by step. Ultimate Cardano Smart Contracts spends two chapters designing and then building a ticketing app, followed by a chapter on testing, security, and scaling1. The finished app's code includes separate contracts for tickets, holding (keeping minted ticket tokens), and swaps (exchanging a ticket for payment)4.
- Two contract languages side by side. Early examples in the companion code come in two versions, one written in Aiken and one in Helios, two languages built for writing Cardano smart contracts5.
- Broken contracts next to their fixes. The security chapter's code pairs a vulnerable contract with a repaired version for three known attack patterns, including double satisfaction (one payment counted for two spends) and token leakage (extra tokens created when a contract does not check the amount)6.
- Practice without real money. A tooling chapter connects apps to Cardano through the Maestro and Ogmios/Kupo data services7, and sets up a private practice network on your own computer with Yaci DevKit8.
- Mint tokens and NFTs. The book covers creating and working with both regular tokens and NFTs, one-of-a-kind digital items, for different use cases1.
What to Expect
The first chapters are background. They explain how blockchains developed, the cryptography that secures them, and how Cardano's network agrees on new blocks1. From there the book moves into transactions, Plutus (the system Cardano uses to run smart contracts), building transactions, validators (the code that decides whether funds can move), and minting tokens (creating them)1. It closes with troubleshooting and a tour of the wider Cardano ecosystem1.
The project chapters build a ticketing app with companion source code. The example apps are written in TypeScript, a common language for web apps, and the companion repository groups the code by chapter2.
Ley started building on Cardano in 2021 through the Plutus Pioneers developer course. At publication, he taught in George Brown College's Blockchain Development Program in Toronto and ran the Cardano Blockchain Toronto meetup1. Venu Kumar Borra, a technical architect for distributed systems and smart contracts, reviewed the book1.
Ultimate Cardano Smart Contracts is sold as a paperback and a Kindle ebook on Amazon9, and directly from Orange AVA1.
