Overview

Matotam is a Cardano app that lets you send a short written message to any Cardano wallet as a small NFT. You type up to 256 characters, your wallet signs one transaction, and the message lands in the recipient's wallet like a tiny collectible. It works without a central server, so messages live entirely on the Cardano blockchain rather than on a company's database.

The project is in early v0.1 beta and runs on Cardano only1. Each message costs about 2.5 ADA, with roughly 1.5 ADA locked inside the message NFT that the sender, the recipient, or Matotam's own service address can later reclaim by burning the NFT (permanently destroying it, which releases the ADA locked inside)1.

Key Features

  • Wallet-to-wallet on-chain messaging. Each message is minted as its own NFT and delivered straight to the recipient's Cardano address, with the text and a small picture stored permanently on the blockchain1.
  • Send by name, not just by address. Matotam supports ADA Handle, the human-readable name service on Cardano, so you can address a message to a short name like $mato instead of a long wallet address1.
  • Optional passphrase encryption. A toggle scrambles the message before it is written on-chain using a passphrase only the sender and recipient know, so block explorers see only encrypted data1.
  • No backend or central inbox. According to the project, the app is fully client-side with no servers in between, which would mean there is no Matotam-run database that could read, delete, or lose messages2.
  • Built as an agent-readable primitive. Each message NFT carries machine-readable metadata describing protocol, type, and thread, which Matotam frames as a building block for wallet-to-wallet communication between bots and AI agents3.

What to Expect

The Matotam interface is a single page. You connect a Cardano wallet through the standard browser wallet connection used across Cardano DApps (CIP-30), type a message of up to 256 characters, paste a recipient address or ADA Handle, and pick whether to encrypt. A preview shows how the message will appear on-chain as a small chat-bubble image. You then approve a transaction in your wallet costing about 2.5 ADA, and the message NFT is minted and sent.

Recipients see the message NFT show up in their wallet or in a Cardano explorer such as pool.pm, the same way any other NFT would appear. Once a message is no longer needed, the sender or recipient can burn the NFT to recover the bulk of the ADA that was locked inside it.

Because Matotam is in beta and has a very small public footprint, expect a minimal site with no documentation portal, no published audit, and a single social channel on X. The protocol page on Matotam's own site lays out a developer-facing schema, and a separate agents page describes planned integrations for AI tools3. The team behind Matotam is not publicly identified on the site; the only public-facing channel is the project's X account (@matotam_ada, link in footer). Independent security review not identified.
